We can make choices to adjust our perception and begin reconnecting with ourselves through positive language. Affirmations are cognitive tools that help us shift our mindset, thoughts, and attitudes by leveraging the brain’s neuroplasticity – the ability to rewire neural pathways based on repeated experiences or thoughts. This can be a wonderful place to start cultivating more compassionate and supportive relationships with ourselves, overcome negative thoughts, and help manage and cope with pain.
When we consistently repeat positive affirmations, we engage in a process known as self-affirmation, activating regions of the brain associated with self-processing and emotional regulation. Practicing affirmations can lead to changes in perception and behavior by strengthening neural connections associated with positive self-concept and self-worth. Through this process, affirmations facilitate a shift in mindset, promoting resilience, reducing levels of stress hormones like cortisol, and increasing activity in brain regions linked to reward and motivation to enhance overall well-being. As we replace self-doubt and negativity with affirmations, we are able to regulate our emotions, reduce levels of stress–increasing activity in brain regions linked to reward and motivation!
